The Lord of Death, Yama Dharma Raja is some serious laughing business in Tollywood. It all started with NTR’s Yamagola followed by Chiranjeevi (“Yamudiki Mogudu”), Mohan Babu and NTR Jr (“Yama Donga”), Ali (“Yama Leela”), Srikanth (“Yama Gola Malli Modalaindi”), who have starred in movies with a Yama theme have made the character an endearing one for the audience. They have all done very well at the BO.
At present , Tollywood and the Yama character still seems to capture the imagination of the filmmakers and movie buffs alike. For starters, Allari Naresh’s latest flick is titled “Yamunda”. If you didn’t already guess yet, the movie, a socio-fantasy set in the backdrop of Yamalokam, is just one of many films that look to the world of Yama for some laughs. There is the Sai Ram Shankar and Parvathi Melton-starrer “Yamaho Yamaha” with Sri Hari playing Yama and also “Cinemakeladam Randi” starring Rajendra Prasad as the Lord of Death. The recently released “Daruvu”, starring Ravi Teja, too had Yama as a central character.
Clearly, Tollywood filmmakers are stretching their imagination, to come up with funny situations around Lord Yama. But will it set the cash registers ringing? It surely did not help “Daruvu” too much.
