In a surprise move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed Nirmala Sita Ram as Ministry of Defence, which is a very crucial ministry. Her appointment as Defence Minister at a time when India has just ended a tense standoff with China in Doklam is interesting.
As Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman today joins the club of woman defence ministers in as many as 15 countries, including France, Italy, Germany and Australia. Earlier, Union minister Arjun Jaitley used to hold Ministry of Defence.
Nirmala finished her graduation in Economics from Seethaiakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirapalli, Sitharaman did a Masters and M.Phil in Economics from the premier Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. She then worked in the Agricultural Engineers Association, UK in London, Senior Manager, Research and Analysis with PricewaterhouseCoopers, also in London and briefly with the BBC World Service.
