Will Shankar Rao join Congress ?

The changing attitude of former minister P Shankar Rao towards Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, against whom he has filed corruption charges in the High Court and caused a CBI probe, has become a hot topic of discussion in political circles.

Shankar Rao has been stating of late, that Jagan’s YSR Congress would sweep the ensuing by-elections. He has also stopped talking ill of Jagan and intensified his tirade against the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.

It is also being said in the media that Shankar Rao is no longer the blue-eyed boy of the Congress family. His attempts to meet the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other top leaders at New Delhi did not fructify. Congress High Command is unwilling to meet the maverick leader who keeps blowing hot and cold.

It is being said that Shankar was stating in his private discussions with party colleagues that he was used by the Congress to assail Jagan and then thrown him out. In an apparent indication of his intention to get closer to Jagan, he has been stating that his party had better chances than Congress in the ensuing by-elections to 18 Assembly and one Lok Sabha seats. He has even commented that Congress would be relegated to the third place.

When the possibility of Shankar joining the Jagan bandwagon came up for discussion on a TV channel, Prof. Nageswar has said nothing was impossible in politics. He has pointed that Jaipal Reddy who has demanded in the Parliament that Rajiv Gandhi should be hanged in Bofors case, has joined the same Congress party and could become even a cabinet minister. Nageswar said even now when any media seeks interview, Jaipal imposes the condition that they should not ask any question about Bofors.

If Sankar really joins Jagan’s party, then it would be a shot in the arm of the latter. Sankar may also spill out some facts that led to the Congress leadership using him to file the case against Jagan.

Even earlier Sankar has on more than one occasion said that it was at the behest of the Congress High Command that he wrote a letter to the High Court listing out the corrupt activities of Jagan. The High Court has treated that letter as a petition and ordered CBI enquiry.

Now if Sankar joins Jagan, he might divulge some very embarrassing facts for the Congress party.
