Vijayawada Railway Division in the South Central Railway has earned a gross income of Rs 2,291.19 crore and transported 9.84 crore passengers during the year 2011-12. Disclosing this at a press conference here today, Divisional Manager Anurag said Vijayawada division had earned Rs.501.05 crore through transporting of passengers and Rs 1,706.45 crore through transporting of goods. The division transported goods of 24,802 million tonnes, he said and informed that it had achieved 14.34 per cent growth rate in overall earnings, 6.67 per cent in passenger transportation. Seventy five per cent of goods transportation took place from Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports, he added. ‘The Vijayawada division has achieved another record of passing the year without accident. This is sixth consecutive year passing without any accidents,’ he said and added that the performance efficient index of the division registered the best ever record of 51.24 per cent compared to 54.34 per cent during the year 2010-11. Explaining about future plans of the railway division, he said three multifunctional complexes at Nellore, Rajahmundry and Vijayawada were being constructed and escalators on platform No two, three, four, and five and ten were being erected at Vijayawada. He said the station yard of Vijayawada was being remodeled at a cost of Rs 52.86 crore and development works were being taken up at Rjahmundry, Kakinada, Nellore, Eluru, Tadepalligudem, Samalkot and Tenali.
