Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu today inaugurated the BRICS global meet on urbanization in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India.
Speaking on this occasion He said, The Indian central government approving an assistance of Rs 1.84 lakh crore which includes Rs 78,292 crore under smart city plans of 33 mission cities, Rs 45,293 crore under Atal Mission and another Rs 56,231 crore for building affordable houses for urban poor. He said, Rs 2 lakh crore investment would be needed annually for creating urban infrastructure in the country.
He said, Urbanization is fast picking up momentum , people are moving ahead to urban areas, the country had 377 million urban population in 2011 and it would cross 600 million in next 15 years. The center has been adopting a 10 point strategy for urban renaissance, which has started yielding results.
Compared to other BRICS countries, India is the least urbanized country while 84 Percent of the Population in Brazil live in Urban areas it is 73 Percent in Russia, the 64 percent in South Africa and 56 percent in china.
He said, Investment of Rs 15,827 crore had been approved for Andhra Pradesh during the past one year for urban schemes, with central assistance of Rs 4,571 crore
Around 450 delegates are participating in the summit including Mayors and Municipal Commissioners of Andhra Pradesh.
