The mines department officials on Tuesday inspected lands belonging to the Sanghi Group on the city’s outskirts following complaints of illegal excavation and transport of gravel. A team of the vigilance wing led by senior official Praveen Reddy of the mines and geology department inspected lands belonging to former Congress MP Girish Sanghi and others at Sanghi Nagar.
There had been complaints regarding excavation of gravel but the owners had claimed that the ground was being levelled for a proposed special economic zone on about 500 acres. During the inspection, the officials seized three vehicles carrying gravel close to the excavation site and handed them over to the Hayatnagar police station.
Ranga Reddy collector V. Seshadri confirmed that there had been complaints regarding illegal excavation and transport of gravel and the same had been forwarded to the mines department for further action. Officials have also been verifying whether there has been any illegal quarrying of metals. KMS Constructions, a company of the Sanghis, had obtained a license to quarry in five acres but the same had expired three years ago. The mines department so far has not renewed the license.
