Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today organised a demonstration and dharna demanding release of water from the Prakasham Barrage to the Krishna delta in the district head quarters Machilipatnam today. Large number of farmers led by five TDP MLAs and MP took out a rally from Koneru Centre to District Collector’s office and organised dharna for more than three hours. As some TDP activists tried to barge into the Collector’s office, they were arrested by the police. TDP MLAs Devineni Umamaheshwara Rao, Dasari Balavardhana Rao, Ambati brahmanaiah, T Prabakhar, Sriram Tataiah, Machilipatnam M P K Narayana Rao and former MP Gadde Ramamohan Rao participated in the agitation. Addressing the gathering, the TDP MLAs demanded that the government announcea date for the release of water to the Krishna delta. MLA Devineni Uma deplored that paddy nurseries were getting withered due to lack of water. Despite water overflowing over the crest gates at Prakasham barrage, across the river Krishna, water was not released to the Krishna delta. He recalled that when water was lower in the Krishna at Nagarjuna Sagar project than now, water was released to the Krishna delta during the regime of TDP. He accused the Secondary Education Minister from the Krishna district K Parthasarathi and MP L Rajgopal of be being indifferent in resolving the problems of farmers. The TDP leaders warned to intensify stir, if water was not released to the Krishna delta by a couple of days.
