Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam – DMDK president, project as next Chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijayakanth tasted a humiliating defeat in the Tamil Nadu general elections 2016. At Ulundurpettai, Vijayakanth came in third polling 26,950 votes and trailing far behind the candidates from AIADMK (63,906 votes) and DMK (57,850 votes). He also lost deposit.

Earlier , The DMDK had allied with the AIADMK ahead of the 2011 polls. Vijayakanth’s party had won 29 seats in that election But this time it has created a grand alliance PWF consisting of four parties including aiko’s Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Communist Party of India, and Communist Party of India (Marxist). Another actor-turned-politician , of All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi R. Sarathkumar contested on AIADMK and lost in Tiruchendur constituency against his DMK rival Anitha R. Radhakrishnan. Sarathkumar secured only 62,356 votes against Radhakrishnan who claimed victory with 88,357 votes.
