Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking against contacting Aliens.
Speaking about the newly announced StarShot program to tell how humans may travel outside our star system within our lifetimes. Stephen Hawking warns saying “One day we might receive a signal from a planet like Gliese 832c, but we should be wary of answering back”.
Gliese 832c, is the nearest Earth-like planet is only 16 light years away from us. It has a mass that is more than five times the mass of the Earth and it orbits a red dwarf star. Gliese receives the same average energy as the Earth does from the sun. This makes it fall in a “habitable zone”
Hawking believes that Gliese has life and civilization in it. Meeting between the two civilizations would resemble Christopher Columbus meeting Native Americans. Hawking quipped saying, “that didn’t turn out so well.”
Hawking believes, Alien civilizations might be more technologically advanced than us. They may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria.
Hawking says “As I grow older I am more convinced than ever that we are not alone. After a lifetime of wondering, I am helping to lead a new global effort to find out”.
Launching the Breakthrough Listen project, which will scan the nearest million stars for signs of life.
