Setback for Jagan

In a major setback for YSR Congress Chief and Kadapa MP Jaganmohan Reddy, a CBI court trying disproportionate assets case against him extended his judicial custody till July 4 on Monday

Jagan appeared on court via video conference from Chanchalguda Jail where he has been lodged after his arrested by CBI in connection with illegal assets case against him.

This is the second time the court has extended Jagan’s custody since his arrest on May 27. Earlier, his custody was supposed to end by Jun 12, a day before the by-elections in Andhra Pradesh. However, a federal court extended till June 25.

The CBI officials probing into allegations against Jagan sought the court to let the agency to put the accused on narcotics test. They also alleged that Jagan was not co-operating with the probing.

Jagan’s arrest prevented him from campaigning for his YSR Congressparty but it helped him win public sympathy

Jagan’s arrest created a lot of hype and his supporters accused ruling Congress party and centre leadership of using the CBI against him to end his political career. In fact, the timing of his arrest added more to this speculation.

This incident garnered him vast support from the public in the latest by-polls in the state, in which his party rode to victory on sympathy wave, securing 15 of 18 MLA seats and one Lok Sabha seat.
