Rich tributes were paid to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder and former Andhra Pradesh Chief minister N.T. Rama Rao on his 17th death anniversary here today. NTR’s family members, TDP leaders and prominent personalities from different walks of life paid tributes at NTR Ghat on the banks of Hussain Sagar Lake here. NTR’s sons N.Balakrishna and N.Harikrishna and grandsons Junior NTR, Kalyanram, Lokesh, son of TDP Chief N.Chandrababu Naidu and other family members paid tributes at NTR Ghat. Earlier in the morning, Nara Lokesh and his father-in-law and actor Balakrishna have participated in a torch rally taken out to NTR Ghat.
Union minister of state for commerce and industry and NTR’s daughter D Purandeswari and NTR’s second wife Lakshmi Parvathi also paid separately. NTR, a popular Telugu actor, who had also directed and produced films under his home banner, had launched TDP in 1982 and created a record of sorts by coming to power within nine months of the launch of his political party, ending the single party rule of the Congress in Andhra Pradesh.
NTR died in January 1996, a few months after he was unseated from power by his son-in-law Chandrababu Naidu, who is heading the party now.
