Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Director Dr B.Sesikeran today said a new Labelling system for food packets would come up soon for stringent Food safety.
Talking to reporters here after participating in a media workshop on the Importance of Agricultural Technology in India here, NIN Director said the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to introduce more stringent laws in the country and the draft provisions of the new labelling are almost ready and will be adopted shortly for all food products. ‘Once the new labelling provisions are introduced, packaged food manufacturers will not be able to get away with any claim they make on the products as they have to be substantiated by a research report,’ he said. The lebelling system already existed in the county but under the new system, the manufacturers should publish their product details in a detailed manner, including the protein per centage of the product and in what way that the product will be useful for the consumers and if so, how. ‘Every claim that is made will have to be backed by research acceptable to FSSAI,’ he added. The new system to be adopted with regard to labelling of packaged food items, will be according to international practices, Dr B Sesikeran, who is also on the panel of FSSAI, added
