In the latest development, Karnataka government on Monday decided to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu , Fearing contempt proceedings from the Supreme Court, Karnataka legislature passed a modified resolution to release water only for drinking purpose
In another development ,The central government ‘U’ turn in the Apex court on forming Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB) , is facing criticism from political parties in Tamil Nadu. The Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the bench on Monday that he had made a mistake by committing to set up the Cauvery Management Board.The Central government told the Supreme court that it does not have the jurisdiction to direct setting up of CMB as it was just a recommendation of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal and not binding on the government. The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu dubbed Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s move as “UnFair”. while DMK accused the BJP-led NDA regime at the Centre of playing politics over the Cauvery water issue.
Earlier, The Supreme Court had earlier on September 30 directed Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water from October 1 till October 6 .
