Hyderabad merger day celebrated

charminar-hyderabadTo mark the merger of Hyderabad with the Indian union in 1948, the ruling TRS, and opposition Congress celebrated it as the merger day, the BJP celebrated it as liberation day.

In 1948 after Independence, the erstwhile Hyderabad State merged with the Indian union following the Indian military operation against the Nizam.

Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy unfurled the tricolor at the TRS while BJP state president K. Laxman hoisted the tricolor in BJP office. TPCC president Uttam Kumar Reddy hoisted the national flag at the party office.

After reports that the Nizam’s Army was committing atrocities on innocent civilians, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel decided “Operation Polo” and “Operation Caterpillar” against Nizam king who later surrendered on September 17, 1948.
