Highlights of the Railway Budget 2016

rail-budget-prabhu-suresh-7476476Union Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu has tabled the Union Railway Budget for the year 2016-17 with a capital plan of Rs. 1,21,000 crore with a provide to citizens a system free from capacity constraint,a system that is efficient.

The Highlights of the Railway Budget are

  • The Expect revenue growth of over 10% this year.
  • Rs. 8.5 lakh crore to be spent over 5 years for modernization of railway infrastructure.
  • Indian Railways to surpass ambitious target of commissioning 2500 kms of broad gauge lines, almost 30% higher than last year.
  • Social media is also being used as a tool to bring transparency.
  • 1,600 km of electrification this year and 2,000 km proposed for the next year.
  • To introduce WiFi services at 100 stations this year, 400 more stations over next two years.
  • Walls of many stations have been converted to murals, also contributing to social awareness.
  • World’s first Bio-vacuum toilet developed by Indian Railways is being used in Bibrugarh Rajdhani express.
  • All stations will be brought under CCTV surveillance.
  • To introduce bar-coded tickets.
  • e-booking on concession passes for journalists to be introduced
  • IRTC will begin to manage catering in a phased manner, local cuisine of choice will be made available.
  • Children’s menu, baby foods, baby boards to be made available for travelling mothers.
  • Porters to not be called “coolies” but be called “sahayaks” now; will be trained in soft skills.
  • Priority provision of passenger amenities and beautification of stations at pilgrimage centres.
  • To introduce separate toilets for “divyang” people including Ajmer, Amritsar, Bihar Sharif, Chengannur, Dwarka, Gaya, Haridwar, Mathura, Tirupati, Varanasi.
  • Propose to invite FM radio stations to provide train borne entertainment via PA systems.
  • The cleaning of toilets by requests through SMS.
  • To install GPS-based digital display in coaches for showing upcoming stations.
  • To publish Rail Bandhu magazine in all regional languages.
  • New policy of multi-purpose stalls at station to provide multiple services like milk and medicines.
  • Introduced Sarthi Seva in Konkan Railways for help to senior citizens;
  • Center to partner with Gujarat,Telangana & Tamil Nadu for developing suburban secs in Ahmedabad,Hyderabad & Chennai by innovative financing mechanism

  • Setting aside Rs 50 crore to fund startups by railway employees
  • No hike in railway fares
