CPI will oppose bauxite mining in tribal agency areas: Karat

Communist Party of India(Marxist) Polit buro member Brinda Karat said her party will oppose the bauxite mining in agency areas and also the proposed new mining policy of the Union government . Talking to media at Narasipatnam on way to to Chintapalli in agency area to address a public meeting, she said the proposed new mining policy would act against the constitutional provisions of protecting the rights of the girijans in the scheduled areas. She said the new mining policy would not allow the affected people for consultation for giving approval for mining activities in the agency and eliminate the hitherto Grama Sabha (Village committee meeting) forapproval. She alleged that the ‘Andhra Pradesh Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan instead of protecting theconstitutional provisions on scheduled areas rights, acting as a ‘postman’ between the Union Tribal Welfare Minister V.Kishore Chandra Surnarayana Deo and theAndhra Pradesh government’. She said the Governor has sent the letter to Andhra Pradesh written by the Union Minister opposing the bauxite mining in agency area of the visaklhaptnam district. Later she addressed a public meeting at bauxite rich ‘Jerrala village and assured to protecting the rights of the girijans.
