Chiranjeevi appealed to donate blood

Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi said on Wednesday that blood donation would help reduce the chances of certain donors getting heart diseases, as it had been observed that an increase in the blood iron levels also increased the chances of heart diseases.

Therefore, blood donation would help in losing iron on regular basis.
More than 550 members donated blood at a blood donation camp organised by the Chiranajeevi Blood Bank at NMR Garden, Bowenpally, as part of a campaign.

Chiranjeevi said that donating blood would stimulate the generation of new blood cells, which would help fight haemochromatosis — a genetic disorder, also known as iron overload disorder, wherein iron accumulates in the body tissues because of improper metabolism. Haemochromatosis might lead to organ damage. Although the disorder was uncommon among Indians, people with iron overload also could easily donate blood and thereby reduce their iron levels.

Drawing upon examples from other countries, he said that one in every 300-400 people in England suffered from the disorder and that the American Red Cross blood services accepted such donors as safe because, though it was a genetic disorder, it would not be harmful to the person receiving blood from such donors.

That apart, one could remain fit by donating blood regularly. One pint of blood (450 ml) when donated would burn 650 calories in the donor’s body. According to reports, elderly people in good health felt invigorated or re-energized by giving blood on a regular basis, he said.

Chiranjeevi finally appealed to all his “blood brothers and sisters” to come forward and volunteer for blood donation camps to save those battling for their lives. “Blood donation is the best donation that one can give,” observed.
