Builders Association demand reduction of taxes
The Vijayawada Builders Association and several trade unions including INTUC, CITU staged a dharna in front of the Sub-Collector’s office, here today demanding the government to withdraw VAT service tax on the construction materials as the constructor sector is in doldrums. Talking to media, Vijayawada Builders Association President Y S Murthy deplored that the heavy enhancement of taxes of construction materials was inhibiting the growth of construction sector on which more than two lakh people depended on for their livelihood. He said during the last few months, the cost of sand had gone up to Rs 6,000 from Rs 2,500, iron from Rs 38,000 to 58,000 and cement from Rs 265 to Rs 315 as taxes including VAT and service tax had increased considerably. He lamented that more than two lakh people were working on the construction sector in Krishna district and their livelihood would be at stake, if the sector was ruined. Mr Murthy demanded the government to reduce taxes and make the construction material available at reasonable prices. The trade union leaders warned to intensify the struggle if the taxes are not reduced.
