Telugu Dessam Party and District Congress Committee (DCC) today staged a day-long dharna in front of district collectorate office here in protest against liquor mafia. TDP president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu led the ‘dharna’ organised by his party workers. The DCC too participated in another demonstration protesting the liquor syndicate for ignoring the section 144 of the prohibitory orders.
Mr Naidu alleged involvement of Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister and APCC President Botcha Satyanarayana (Satti Babu) and his family members in liquor trade in the district.
However, district administration officials tried to break the deadlock between the two parties. The Congress said it would stage protests whenever and wherever the TDP plans the same. Following this chances of preventive arrests late tonight in the Congress and TDP camps were not ruled out, police said. Ahead of the dharna on the liquor syndicates in Vizianagaram, the Congress and TDP leaders continued their diatribe against each other. More than 3000 Police personnel were deployed in the district for controlling law and order situation. In Hyderabad, Mr Satyanarayana lashed out at the TDP chief for planning the dharna and making personal allegations against him. He said the TDP leaders were trying to gain ‘cheap political mileage’ by their acts.
Alleging that a majority of the liquor outlets in Vizianagaram were owned by the TDP leaders, The PCC chief demanded Mr Naidu to hold similar demonstration in his native Chittoor district.
He charged them with trying to create a law and order problem in the district.
